Seniors Health Clinic

Nakile recognizes that seniors make up a large segment of the population in South West Nova Scotia and that many seniors do not have regular access to a family doctor for many reasons.  We know that, often times, seniors are left with no choice but to use emergency departments for routine health care appointments and prescription refills.

Nakile now offers a Seniors Service Medical Clinic operated by a Nurse Practitioner two days per month on every second Wednesday.

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse with additional training.  A Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively with physicians and other specialists.

How can a Nurse Practitioner help?

A Nurse practitioner can arrange appointments to see seniors who do not have regular access to a family doctor.  A Nurse Practitioner will take the patient’s medical history and perform a complete physical examination.  The Nurse Practitioner may order diagnostic and screening tests, such as blood work or x-rays.  Referrals can be made to other health care professionals, including physicians, dietitians, physiotherapists, nursing or home care services.

Why would I visit the Clinic?

Nakile’s Seniors’ Health Clinic is offered on-site in Argyle.  Visiting the Nurse Practitioner for routine prescription refills or blood work may be more convenient and cost-effective for many seniors and their families than making a special trip to regional hospitals for such services.  As well, arranging an appointment with the nurse practitioner may be easier on occasion than booking an appointment with the senior’s current family doctor.

Who can see a Nurse Practitioner at the new Seniors’ Health Clinic at Nakile?

Any senior, 65 years of age or older, who lives in Shelburne, Yarmouth or Digby county.

I have a Family Doctor.  Can I still visit the Nurse Practitioner at Nakile's Seniors' Health Clinic?

Yes.  The Nurse Practitioner is not meant to replace your existing family doctor.  However, if you decide to see the Nurse Practitioner you should inform your family doctor.
